Why should horses be given sunlight treatment?
Because stabling, less time at grass and more time in the indoor arena mean they hardly get any natural sunlight any more. Treatment in the solarium makes up for this shortfall. Sunlight keeps not only people but also horses vital and resilient.
Is a horse solarium only worthwhile for competition and sport horses?
No. Even leisure horses no longer get enough sun today, even when they are out at grass. The health-promoting and performance-enhancing effect of sunlight treatment applies regardless of what the horse is used for.
Before or after training?
Both, with different effects. Before work, the radiation gets the circulation going. After training it calms the horse and fully relaxes the muscles.
How often and for how long should treatment last?
Three sessions a week are enough to maintain health; for therapeutic purposes treatment can be given daily. As a guide, one session lasts 20 minutes. This recommendation applies to treatment with UV light; the Solaride Easy works without UV, purely with infrared.
What does infrared radiation do for a horse?
That depends on the wavelength. Infrared A penetrates deeper layers of tissue, stimulates the metabolism and relaxes the muscles; infrared B and C only warm the air or the surface of the skin, and that heat is lost again immediately in an open stable. All three Solaride models therefore use Philips lamps with the highest possible A component.
Which complaints does heat therapy help with, and when does it not?
Infrared heat has proved its worth for chronic complaints such as arthritis and muscle pain and supports wound healing; in the cold season it is also used as a complement for chronic respiratory conditions. Inflamed injuries, on the other hand, should not be irradiated.
